Message	surge can occur if you shut the throttle without a BOV or recirc. The boosted air has no where to go, so it backs up through the compressor. The same can occur at WOT if the engine can't swallow all of the compressor output, and it again backs up through the compressor. This creates unstable flow and high thrust loads on the compressor, potentially causing damage
